TMJ Awareness Month
Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ and TMD, is a condition that causes pain in the joints in your jaw that connect the temporal bone and the mandible.
November is National TMJ Awareness Month, and it's important to shine a light on this disorder because more than 10 million Americans are affected by TMJ, and many might not even know it.
Here are a few symptoms to look out for:
jaw pain, clicking, or popping
ear pain, earaches, or popping sounds in the ears
stiff or sore jaw muscles
locking of the jaw joint
pain in the temple area and headachesa
But what causes TMJ? TMJ is caused when the small shock-absorbing disk that separates the cartilage between the temporomandibular joint erodes or moves out of its proper alignment, the joint's cartilage is damaged by arthritis, or the joint is damaged by a blow or other impact. Other causes include stress, which can cause you to tighten facial and jaw muscles or clench or grind your teeth.
