National Children’s Dental Health Month

It's never too early to start teaching the little ones to take good care of their teeth. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and it serves as a reminder to give children the best start at oral health.

From brushing and flossing to healthy snacks and routine dental checkups, it's so important to teach them the proper way to take care of their teeth at an early age. A healthy smile and good oral health are built on good prevention strategies.

Here are 8 Ways to Make Oral Hygiene Fun for Kids

  • Develop a routine. Routines become habits, and it’s more likely to be done each day. Pick times that work well for your kids and have them stick to it each day.

  • Reward good oral hygiene habits. A great example is to create a sticker chart where they earn points towards a small toy or privilege each week.

  • Use timers like a race to get them excited about brushing.

  • Make each day different. Sing different songs, show them videos about brushing and flossing, or tell them a 2-minute story.

  • Get them a toothbrush with their favorite character or their favorite color. Better yet, let them pick it out.

  • Change up their toothpaste. Change the flavor, brand, or color, but always choose an ADA-approved toothpaste.

  • Take the time to teach them the correct technique for brushing and flossing. If they don't know how to do it properly, they might avoid doing it.

  • Set an example. Make brushing and flossing a family affair. Show them that you too take the time to take care of your teeth and gums. And don’t forget to schedule your next checkup and cleaning too.
